Following the success of last year’s event, 2016’s Gloucester Carnival theme will be ‘Celebration’. There will be live bands and music, Arts, plenty of famous local faces and music in the park until late.
Taking place on Saturday 23 of July, the event kicks off with the Carnival procession which starts from the Lower Westgate Street, proceeds along Eastgate Street, Lower Eastgate Street and then into Gloucester Park. Following the procession there will be a prize giving ceremony for the winners of each category.
Once the parade reaches Gloucester Park the festivities do not stop. In addition to the Wilson’s Funfair, there will be a music stage featuring both national and local talent. Previous performers include King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, King Solomon, Solid Gone, Awfully Nice and others. There will be a fully stocked bar alongside the music and catering. The event will be running into the evening and finishing at 10:00pm.
Gloucester Carnival 2016 is part of Gloucester’s Summer of Music, Arts & Culture (SoMAC) programme taking place alongside events such as the 3 Choirs Music Festival, The Gloucester Quays Food Festival, Sportbeat and Art In The City.
Karen Pearson, event operations manager commented “We have been very happy with how carnival has developed over the years and aim to make it relevant to both those who have grown up with the event and a modern Gloucester. We are looking to draw crowds not just from the local area but also from wider a field to demonstrate the local community and culture in Gloucester. With over 80 people signed up already this year, Carnival 2016 is looking very promising.”
Councillor Lise Noakes, cabinet member for culture and leisure said “The annual Gloucester Carnival is an event at the very heart of the city. It is a great tradition that supports culture for everyone to enjoy. The numbers of participants and spectators keeps growing each year and it’s important to keep the momentum going.”
